The emotional pitch of many comments suggests an overinvestment in Palin as "one of us."
Palin's fans say they like her specifically because she's an outsider, not part of the Washington club. When she flubs during interviews, they identify with that, too. "You see the lack of polish, we applaud it," one reader wrote.
Of course, there's a difference between a lack of polish and a lack of coherence. Some of Palin's interview responses can't even be critiqued on their merits because they're so nonsensical. But even that is someone else's fault, say Palin supporters. The media make her uncomfortable."

Este debate entre Sarah Palin (R) Tony Knowles (D) y Andrew Halcro (I) para la gubernatura de Alaska fue en noviembre de 2006.
Knowles era un Gobernador popular, con dos términos, en búsqueda del tercero.
Podemos ver a una Sarah Palin muy confiada, el Gobernador Knowles bastante borrado y gris. Parece que ella conoce las preocupaciones de los ciudadanos de Alaska: pesca, caza, seguridad, industria petrolera. Ella responde, confiada, muchas veces tonterias.
Podemos ver su visión ultraconservadora en temas como derechos a parejas gay, dice que el matrimonio es la unión entre un hombre y una mujer y si así lo entiende la Constitución, no hay porque dar ayudas a las parejas gay. Considera que debe haber un referéndum para dar sentido al matrimonio en la Constitución de Alaska.
En el tema de investigación con celulas madre, dice que ella es provida, y que respeta la vida, por lo que ella considera que la investigación destruye la vida y por eso está en contra. Además de hacer un comentario como que las universidades en Alaska no hacen esto.
Se manifiesta totalmente en contra del aborto aún y cuando su hija fuera violada. Ante pregunta expresa sobre qué haría si un hijo(a) suyo se embarazara antes del matrimonio, qué haría? respuesta: Provida en cualquier caso. La respuesta de Knowles o la de Halcro me parecen mas humanas, ella en cambio: estoy por la vida. Knowles y Halcro, que también tienen hijas, responden que es una decisión de ellas... Que feminista es Palin, no dice piensa que su hija deba decidir.
Sobre la Eutanasia, Knowles y Halcro: es una decisión individual. No quiero al gobierno tomando decisiones personales. Palin: es una decisión individual, el gobierno no debe sancionar o asistir la terminación de la vida. Dice que es una decisión personal.

Preocupa en este debate que Joe Biden pueda comportarse como un profesor en los temas o "meta la pata" (pues es especialista en ello) aunque tenga mucho más experiencia en debates que ella. Joe Biden es miembro de la Casa de Representantes desde 1972, cuando Sarah Palin estaba en la escuela, lo que puede ser una ventaja o una desventaja, como lo fue con John McCain... Preocupa que ella pueda ganar, con base en sus encantos.
Son, ambos, una caja de pandora...

Is it too much to ask that she come to realize that she wants, in that wonderful phrase in American politics, "to spend more time with her family"? Having stayed in purdah for weeks, she finally agreed to a third interview. CBS's Katie Couric questioned her in her trademark sympathetic style. It didn't help. When asked how living in the state closest to Russia gave her foreign-policy experience, Palin responded thus:
"It's very important when you consider even national-security issues with Russia as Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America. Where—where do they go? It's Alaska. It's just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to—to our state."

COURIC: Why isn't it better, Governor Palin, to spend $700 billion helping middle-class families who are struggling with health care, housing, gas and groceries; allow them to spend more and put more money into the economy instead of helping these big financial institutions that played a role in creating this mess?
PALIN: That's why I say I, like every American I'm speaking with, were ill about this position that we have been put in where it is the taxpayers looking to bail out. But ultimately, what the bailout does is help those who are concerned about the health-care reform that is needed to help shore up our economy, helping the—it's got to be all about job creation, too, shoring up our economy and putting it back on the right track. So health-care reform and reducing taxes and reining in spending has got to accompany tax reductions and tax relief for Americans. And trade, we've got to see trade as opportunity, not as a competitive, scary thing. But one in five jobs being created in the trade sector today, we've got to look at that as more opportunity. All those things under the umbrella of job creation. This bailout is a part of that.

It is not just painful, but frightening to watch someone who could become the vice president of the United States stumbling around like this in an interview.
Ms. Couric asked Ms. Palin to explain how Alaska’s proximity to Russia “enhances your foreign policy credentials.”
“Well, it certainly does,” Ms. Palin replied, “because our, our next-door neighbors are foreign countries, there in the state that I am the executive of. And there—”
Gently interrupting, Ms. Couric asked, “Have you ever been involved in any negotiations, for example, with the Russians?”
“We have trade missions back and forth,” said Ms. Palin. “We do. It’s very important when you consider even national security issues with Russia. As Putin rears his head and comes into the airspace of the United States of America, where do they go? It’s Alaska. It’s just right over the border. It is from Alaska that we send those out to make sure that an eye is being kept on this very powerful nation, Russia, because they are right there. They are right next to our state.”

Joe Biden next week, Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin met with seasoned statesman and Nobel Peace Prize–winner Henry Kissinger yesterday to take advantage of his extensive foreign policy knowledge and expertise in carpet-bombing innocent civilians in nations with which the U.S. is not officially at war.
"Dr. Kissinger has given Gov. Palin thorough instructions for launching deadly covert military operations in tiny Southeast Asian countries in blatant disregard for human life and international law," said McCain campaign spokesperson Tracey Schmitt of Palin's brief consultation with the Nixon and Ford administrations' former secretary of state and national security adviser. "In addition, the governor now feels completely confident that, if she is ever required to step in for Sen. McCain to mastermind the toppling of a democratically elected but left-leaning South American government without congressional consent, she will be fully prepared."
Sources close to the campaign said that Palin's meeting with Vice President Cheney about how to claim executive supremacy for the purpose of bypassing constitutional limits on torture has been canceled since advisers feel she already has enough personal experience with the subject.

Habrá debate mañana o no? La crisis afecta las elecciones
El día de ayer hubo muchas alertas noticiosas, no sólo respecto de la crisis económica, cómo resolverla; sino respecto de las campañas electorales.
Barack Obama dió una conferencia de prensa llamándo a soluciones bipartisanas y propuso tres puntos de ayuda: que a la gente se trate como inversores para que se regrese centavo por centavo, que se haga también un plan de ayuda para salvar las casas y las crisis individuales, y que no se premie a los ejecutivos de Wall Street por su error. La conferencia fue un llamado a buscar soluciones conjuntas:
McCain avisó que suspendía su campaña y llamó a Obama para pedirle que suspendieran el primer debate del viernes 26 para irse a Washington y buscar soluciones en el Senado para la crisis y resolver sobre el paquete de ayuda. Esto se vió como un movimiento que ponía a Obama en aprietos. Obama está arriba en las encuestas nuevamente, y cancelar el debate por "considerar que la crisis económica es ahora mucho más importante para los ciudadanos" pone a McCain de nuevo en su lema "Country first".
Obama decidió no suspender el debate, pues considera que lo más importante ahora para los ciudadanos es precisamente poder tomar una decisión para el 4 de noviembre. Presentarse ante la gente y hablar de sus posiciones en la economía, en la política exterior, en lo militar, en casos concretos.

La otra nota es que ayer por la noche Bush se dirigió a la nación, como siempre habla en un sólo tono: fatídico y plano.

Proyecto McCain/Palin: declarar la guerra al que se deje
Palin dijo que habría que defender a los miembros de la OTAN, aún contra Rusia.
McCain dijo que no sabe si recibiría a Zapatero en la Casa Blanca.
Palin iba a hablar hoy en un rally contra Irán, y dijo esto "llamamos a una acción para frenarlo".
Qué sigue, seguro el viernes que es el debate en temas de política exterior, McCain nos tiene preparado otro enfrentamiento.
Ah! y por cierto, Sarah Palin está aprendiendo por ósmosis política exterior, no sé si se pegue por darle la mano y saludar a varios representantes y diplómaticos en la reunión de la ONU o con tan sólo mirar de cerca a Henry Kissinger...
Palin tiene un op-ed en the New York Sun, es lo que hubiera sido su speech en el rally anti-Irán.
